We’re Leigh and James, and we lived in Washington DC for more than 25 years before deciding it was time to change things up. On August 30, 2017, we took off for South America to travel and live for at least a year. We started this blog to share our experiences.

The name of the blog comes from a 1956 British children’s song called Nellie the Elephant. The song was covered by punk band The Toy Dolls in 1984 and was a huge hit. The chorus: “Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus. Off she went with a trumpety trump, trump, trump, trump.”
